“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons"

Great piece—this is a great way of looking at it. Explains a lot about the anxiety and distress adults who were “formerly gifted children” feel—they were ahead of the curve, but didn’t turn their edge or aptitude into anything extraordinary while everyone else was catching up. Now many just vaguely feel like the “should have” done more or accomplished more . . .

So, here’s your choice:

Pay now (by taking action).

Or pay later (with regret).

Both are painful.

Only one moves you forward.

Holy dooley. That is powerful. I have taken huge amounts in action in many domains, health, building my dream living arrangements (straw bale house off-grid in the forest with orchards and wild animals - just paradise) and parenting amongst other things but music ate me up inside. Not doing it nearly drove me mad. Now at 53 I am releasing one song a fortnight and aim for one per week by the middle of 2025. I have regrets about not giving myself in this area and it boils down to fear of rejection. Being disagreeable toward the community and governments around Covid policies has made me lose my fear of rejection. I have now been rejected. Nothing more to lose so - Lets . Fucking. Go.

By the time I end up doing something that I thought about doing for a long time, I'm always surprised at how much less energy it took just to do it. I'm burning my comfortable planet of comfort down making it uninhabitable for me to return. I'm heading into the unknown in pursuit of my dreams.
